Every year Wellington city hosts a wide range of events, including concerts, sporting matches, live theatre and dance, exhibitions and festivals. The Council supports many of these events through grants, event coordination, and promotional activities.

Carols by Candlelight

8.00pm, 6 December, Basin Reserve

Carols by Candlelight participants

Join Nick Tansley and 19 musicians in filling the Basin Reserve with Christmas sounds. Bring your picnic hamper, blanket and Christmas spirit (no alcohol though) and join in the fun.

Gates open at 5.30pm.

Bike the Bays

14 December, starts in Waitangi Park

Bike the Bays participants

Bike along Wellington's beautiful coastline in 3km, 10km, or 26km return journeys. All rides start in Waitangi Park and are open to riders of all abilities and types. After the ride, picnic in Waitangi Park and enjoy live bands, give-aways and food stalls from 11.00am to 1.00pm.

Christmas 2008

Christmas tree in Midland Park

Enjoy seasonal decorations including the giant Christmas tree in Midland Park, red and green themed street lighting and Christmas flags around the city and suburbs.

A variety of events are taking place including Carols by Candlelight and Stu Duval's Christmas storytelling at Capital E.

New Year's Eve Party

New Year's Eve fun at Civic Square

Welcome in the New Year and Summer City with a bumper crop of top-class acts including The Beat Girls, The Constituents and Uncle Monkey.

Get your 'glad rags' on, grab the whānau and meet in Civic Square for a free, fun and family-friendly event.

Toasted Sandwiches - New Year's Eve

8.00pm - 7.00am, 31 December - 1 January, Shed 6

Toasted Sandwiches presents New Year's Eve on the Waterfront.

Ring in New Year's Eve 2009 in style on the waterfront with Toasted Sandwiches at Shed 6, featuring DJ Zane Lowe, Concord Dawn and Minuit.
